Top Performing Stocks To Watch For 2014

This past year was largely characterized by a relentless bull-run that pushed markets to new all-time highs. Along the way, a number of dividend stocks charged forward, taking advantage of the positive sentiment on Wall Street. But while many came away with a positive 2013, a handful of stocks slipped on the year. Below, we outline the five worst performing dividend stocks of 2013.

5.IAMGOLD Corp (IAG) – Down 69.4%

Another gold miner goes down for the count, as IAMGOLD saw a similar year to Gold Fields Limited. Though the stock saw some relief in August, its 2013 was more or less a nosedive. With any rally, some examples of over-extension can be found. One stock to sell on the short side can be seen in Acorda Therapeutics (ACOR), which to some will look cheap with its low P/E ratio of 9.6. Looking at the fundamentals, product stories some potential obstacles. Looking at the walk-test data in the company's central offering (Ampyra) have been largely uninspiring. Because of this, further Phase IIb trials will likely be required before we can see a move into Phase III. This will almost certainly stall the development process - by as much as 2 years. This story will continue to drag on projections and create downward revisions in both sales growth and earnings projections and sales growth. Upside potential for this stock remains limited, and short selling opportunities await on any rallies:

The bad news: Major stock indexes finished lower today. The good news: The damage was not as bad as it could have been, as Walt Disney (DIS), International Business Machines (IBM), 3M (MMM), Walgreen (WAG) and Genworth Financial (GNW) rose.

Lastly, you'll note that both Reinsurance Group of America and Genworth Financial (NYSE: GNW) appear on two separate tables here, as they both sport high free cash flow yields and trade below tangible book value. Those deep value metrics have surely caught the eye of Buffett and his research team.

The broader stock market has been on a great run so far in 2013, but a few stocks are soaring past the market. On its road to recovery, shares of Genworth Financial (NYSE: GNW  ) are up over 40% year to date. However, with shares are still trading at a huge discount to book value, is there more room to run?

The cheapest stocks in the S&P
On a book-value basis, financial stocks have had low book values for a long time. Genworth Financial (NYSE: GNW  ) trades at just one-third of book value, while plenty of other insurance companies and banks offer price-to-book ratios of between 0.5 and 0.75. Yet during the financial crisis, investors learned just how inaccurate book values were. Massive writedowns of toxic assets proved necessary to reflect the actual value of those assets, and as a result, price-to-book ratios temporarily soared even as stock prices plunged.

While the Bakken formation is already on most investor radars, few American investors may realize that the formation stretches North into the oil and gas rich Canadian province of Saskatchewan wherestocks like Surge Energy Inc (TSE: SGY), Questerre Energy Corp (TSE: QEC), Crescent Point Energy Corp (TSE: CPG), Keyera Corp (TSE: KEY) and Centor Energy Inc (OTCBB: CNTO) have been pumping out a good flow of newsworthy news in recent weeks. I should mention that Canada oil reserves are ranked #3 after to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia with over 95% of these reserves being the oil sands of Alberta while the neighboring province of Saskatchewan (which the Bakken formation stretches into from South Dakota and Montana) along with offshore areas of Newfoundland also contain substantial production and reserves (Note:Excluding oil sands, Alberta would have 39% of Canada remaining conventional oil reserves, followed byoffshore Newfoundland with28% and Saskatchewan with 27%).

But its reserves are lower than U.S. domiciled small-cap Stone Energy (SGY) and mid-cap Whiting Petroleum (WLL). However, in the case of Stone Energy a larger portion of its proved and probable reserves are lower margin and less profitable natural gas, with natural gas making up 51% of its reserves and oil and NGLs the remaining 49%.

Energy XXI CEO John Schiller has talked about the details of the acquisitionwith Jim Cramer on CNBC's "Mad Money" and he noted thatEPL Oil & Gas offers areas of expertise that EXXI currently lacks.
