5 Stocks Begging for a Short Squeeze

There's never a shortage of naysayers on Wall Street.

There are plenty of investors betting against publicly traded companies by selling them short, hoping to profit if the share prices head lower. However, some stocks have unusually large sums of short-sellers relative to their typical trading activity. This results in a high short interest ratio, and it's something that both bulls and bears need to watch closely.

The short interest ratio is easy enough to calculate. Take the total number of shares sold short, and divide that by the average number of shares in that stock that trade in a day. That's the short interest ratio, or the number of days that it would take to cover all of those bearish positions given typical trading volume.

There could be some legitimate reasons for high short interest ratios. A stock could have a lot of convertible debt out there and investors are merely hedging their equity risk. However, for the most part, a stock with a high short interest ratio is also a logical candidate for a short squeeze, sending the stock higher at the first whiff of a positive catalyst as the worrywarts scramble to close out their positions.

Let's take a look at a few companies with unusually high short interest ratios as of late last month.

Feeding the bears
Higher One was a promising trailblazer a few years ago, offering colleges and their coeds a cost-efficient way to manage financial aid and refunds. There have been a few hiccups along the way, and now growth has slowed dramatically. The good news for Higher One is that it still watches over millions of accounts and its retention rate with campuses is holding up well. Adjusted revenue growth of 9% last year isn't too shabby.

Exelixis is hard at work tackling cancer. Shorts were left stinging last week when the stock soared 14% after delivering inspiring preclinical data detailing the effectiveness of its lead compound's ability to treat cancer tumors that have metastasized to the bone. However, the approval process is torturously long, and shorts are naturally betting that Exelixis won't pan out.

Capstone Turbine is making co-generation turbines that run on different fuel types. Capstone isn't profitable, but Wall Street's banking on breakeven results for its latest fiscal year that started this month. Capstone has had no problem getting potential customers to buy in, closing out its latest quarter with $136.5 million in orders. Last week it announced its first order for micro-turbine energy systems for China's oil and gas market.

Fusion-io has had a volatile trading history since going public two summers ago, and that's probably part of the appeal for short-sellers here. Its ioMemory platform provides a storage solution that speeds up virtualization, databases, cloud computing, big data, and performance applications. Growth was certainly there last time out. Revenue soared 43% in its latest fiscal quarter, and profitability more than doubled. However, Fusion-io's guidance called for a sharp sequential dip. We'll know how that plays out in next week's report.

Finally, we have IMAX. Critics have been arguing that the multiplex is dead, suggesting that IMAX's supersized theatrical experiences won't be enough to save the movie theater industry. Reality has gone with more of a Hollywood ending. IMAX continues expanding, and movie studios continue to embrace the fast-growing premium platform. Just yesterday, IMAX announced further expansion in Mexico and a deal to carry more Paramount Pictures releases.

Waiting is the hardest part
All five of these companies have their challenges, but it's easy to see how positive catalysts in upcoming quarterly results -- or upbeat events along the way -- could send the shorts scrambling for the exits, driving the shares higher in a short squeeze.

Shorting these five companies doesn't seem like a bright idea, but it would be a boring marketplace if everyone were bullish.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Emulex (ELX) is a provider of a range of network convergence solutions that intelligently connect servers, storage and networks within the data center. This stock closed up 1.6% to $8.14 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $8.05-$8.22

    52-Week Range: $5.72-$8.99

    Thursday's Volume: 727,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 786,981

From a technical perspective, ELX bounced modestly higher here right above some near-term support at $7.95 with decent upside volume. This stock has been trending sideways inside of a consolidation chart pattern over the last month, with shares moving between 7.50 on the downside and $8.46 on the upside. This modest spike is now starting to push shares of ELX within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern. That trade will hit if ELX manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.34 to $8.46 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ELX as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $7.95 or $7.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 786,981 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ELX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $8.99. Any high-volume move above $8.99 will then give ELX a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $10 to $11.19.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] n. When it traded around $4.50 (it now more like $7.50 a share) it was a net-net with a good business and a moat. There were risks customer concentration for one and it was no blue chip. There was no diversification of product lines, customers, geography, industry, etc. It was closely tied to U.S. construction activity.

All this means it was no blue chip. Not that it didn have a moat. I felt it did. And certainly not that it wasn a high quality business. It demonstrably was (unleveraged returns on tangible equity were around 30%). And it was a net-net. In fact, it was a net cash stock at one time.

So they do happen. But they are rare. The usual distinction with net-nets is not between companies like that companies which may have a moat, do earn good returns on capital, etc. but between companies that are legitimate and illegitimate businesses.

A legitimate business is in my mind a historically profitable one. It is likely to have positive retained earnings (there are exceptions to this rule but it a good first check). It should have more years of profits (6 or more) than losses in the last 10 years. And it should be self-financing.

Compare this to an illegitimate business. The least legitimate businesses are those that while publicly traded have never turned a profit and can self finance. They may be net-nets but they are net-nets because they have issued stock in the past and then seen their share prices drop. Retained earnings are often negative.

There are other factors to consider. Is the business old or young? Is depreciation and other accounting especially conservative or aggressive? Are taxes especially conservative or aggressive? And is share issuance dilutive or not.

I think a legitimate business tends towards LIFO accounting, quicker depreciation, higher taxes paid as a percentage of reported income, and lower share issuance. There are exceptions. Many

Take George Risk (RSKIA). All of their competitors moved overseas. Theye still in Nebraska. Management doesn really claim they can either be better or cheaper than their competitors. They know they can be cheaper. And as far as better this isn dark chocolate theye selling. Beyond customization, timeliness, and reliability I not sure the idea of ualityhas much meaning in that business. It either frustration-free or it not. The two things George Risk can be are timely and customized. Both of those things are easier to be for American customers if you are manufacturing in the U.S.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] things I said was that I knew George Risk's materials cost was higher than some competitors' selling price. The fact that any company could survive under conditions like that immediately suggested that dollars paid for the product was not the key concern for this product.

Perceived costs had to involve other concerns like customization, shipping speed, reliability, etc. Because it was a low cost product going into a higher cost product going into very high cost projects it seemed likely there was the opportunity to raise prices if needed. And that's what they ended up doing. The important clue for me in that investigation was the severe cost disadvantage George Risk had. You couldn compete at such a cost disadvantage unless price was less important than I initially thought.

I think you will find that most of these insights are not available in the financial statements. They come from reading the 10-Ks of all companies in the industry, reading articles about the companies, listening to all conference call transcripts, etc.

For example, there is not much in the financial statements of Carnival (CCL) that explains how the cruise business really works. But all of the companies in the industry (CCL, RCL and NCL) freely discuss the economics of their business in great detail. They break out costs before and after fuel. They give you per-passenger prices of how much newly built ships cost. They give you lots and lots of details. They explain how they price their product (the way airlines do) and so on. There is an extreme level of detailed explanation of the business in the various conference calls, 10-Ks, etc.

A great source for this information is going back to the time the company went public or at least finding the S-1 of a competitor. When a company goes public it often gives much more detail into product economics, etc., than it will later on when it reports annual results.

That is also a good place to learn about market share, com

  • [By Geoff Gannon] >Ark Restaurants (ARKR). When I bought them - and even now - I think their return on buyback would be high and I'd be in favor of it. However, the stocks are illiquid and their free cash flow relative to the dollar value of freely traded shares is not high. As a result, I'm always in favor of RSKIA and ARKR buying back stock. But, I understand it's very hard for them to do in practice unless there is a meaningful holder who signals he wants out of the stock.

My approach to buybacks is pretty simple. One, I prefer them. Two, I look at the share count history over the last 10 to 20 years as my guide to what the company might do in the future - I want a pattern of predictable behavior. Generally, that means a continuously shrinking share count that shrinks in bull markets and bear markets, panics and recessions and booms and busts and so on. Three, if I'm a buyer of the stock - then the company should be a buyer of its own stock. No questions asked on that one. If the stock is good enough for me to buy it's clearly good enough for the company to buy. Finally, I look for the return on buyback. I tend to focus on the earning power the company is buying relative to the net cash it is spending. If a company has cash on its balance sheet, the amount of net cash consumed by a buyback will be less than it appears because I will end up with a greater percentage ownership of the resulting balance sheet as well as the income statement.

I want the return on buyback to always be at least 10%. As a rule, the average company will only get returns on its buybacks of 10% or higher if it pays less than 15 times normal earnings. In special cases - fast growing companies, companies where free cash flow vastly exceeds reported income, etc. - it is possible that buybacks above 15 times earnings will return more than 10%. It almost never makes sense for a company to buy back stock at over 25 times earnings. So, for most companies, under 15 times earnings is the green zone for bu

I don love that list. I like the 14 past picks in the Ben Graham Net-Net Newsletter model portfolio much better. The newsletter only owns 1 of those 9 net-nets. When the White House starts giving investment advice, we're all in trouble

russia, short selling, stocks, equities, white house, jay carney, advice Bloomberg, Getty Images, iStock, Gerardo Tabones

When the White House starts dishing out advice about investing in the global equity markets, apparently short-sellers don't listen. And why should they?

On March 18, press secretary Jay Carney said that the only investments worth making in Russian equities are wagers that the market will decline.

Anyone paying attention wisely wasn't really paying attention. The Russian equity market, as measured by the Market Vectors Russia ETF (RSX), the largest U.S. exchange traded fund tracking the Russian market, was down 8.7% since the start of the Crimean crisis in late February but since Mr. Carney's vague and somewhat confusing statement, it's up 2.4%.

In fact, some are even calling the “blood on the streets” of Russia's stock market a buying opportunity.

The Market Vectors Russia Small-Cap ETF (RSXJ) has fallen by 15.7% since Russia started its advance on Crimea, but has gained back 1.7% since Mr. Carney said investors should avoid the Russian market.

Over those same periods, the S&P 500 Index has been essentially flat.

To be fair, it was never clear whether Mr. Carney was suggesting that investors help the U.S. government punish Russia by dumping and/or shorting Russian stocks, or whether he was giving investors a friendly heads-up that U.S. and European sanctions could eventually hurt the Russian economy and, ultimately, its equity markets.

Whatever, it's clear that the short-sellers didn't take the bait.

According to Bloomberg, the percentage of shares of RSX borrowed for shorting has fallen to 14% of the total stock, which is down from 17% the day Mr. Carney spoke, and a record 21% on March 3.

“I don't believe whether a U.S. investor invests in Russia will have any impact on the Russian stock market, but telling people to get out of the stock market is manipulative,” said Bill Mann, portfolio manager at Motley Fool Asset Management.

Mr. Mann pointed out that in addition to being manipulative, such statements also expose a certain level of ignorance regarding the way equity markets work.

“Selling a stock is a derivative and largely neutral response, because the only way out of a stock is to sell it to somebody else who wants to buy it,” he said.

Mr. Mann generally avoids allocating to Russian equities in the two funds he manages because he isn't comfortable with the way a third of the country's public companies are owned by the government and another third are owned by Russian oligarchs.

But even if he liked specific Russian stocks, Mr. Mann said. he wouldn't avoid them based on a White House effort to whip up some populist campaign to punish Russia.

“The stock market ultimately f! ollows the performance of the businesses, and a stock price at any point is just an equilibrium,” Mr. Mann said. “If you can impact the performance of those businesses, you will deeply impact the stock, and if that's what the White House meant to say, maybe that's what should have been said.”

If what we're seeing is the start of regular theme of investment advice coming from White House spokespeople, maybe it's time for a new market barometer to basically do the opposite of what's being advised.

But, at the very least, it opens a new can of challenges for the White House.

“What are they going to do when things start to improve, tell short-sellers to cover their positions?” said Joseph Witthohn, vice president of product development at Emerald Asset Management.

“The White House should not ever be in the advice business on something this serious,” Mr. Witthohn added. “They shouldn't be looking for U.S. investors' help in manipulating the economies of other nations.”

Hot Income Companies For 2014

The Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) have continued their string of recent gains this morning, up more than 150 points as of 10:55 a.m. EDT. Much of the enthusiasm among investors came from some promising economic reports, including weekly jobless-claim numbers that fell by 9,000 to 346,000, as well as a 0.5% gain in personal income that beat out a 0.3% jump in personal spending. In addition, strength on the housing front continued to bolster the economy, with the National Association of Realtors reporting that pending home sales jumped to six-and-a-half-year highs after a 6.7% increase in May.

Clearly, the financial health of consumers in general is of paramount importance to stocks throughout the economy, as consumer spending drives the majority of economic activity and can therefore make or break an economic recovery. But as for the housing-specific data, investors should be cautious before reading too much into this month's favorable data.

The specific danger to the housing market's recovery comes from mortgage rates, which have surged in the past two months by more than a full percentage point. The NAR noted in its report that in the short run, higher mortgage rates might have prompted greater numbers of contract signings as buyers rushed to take advantage of previously locked-in rates or sought to get financing before rates could rise even further. Big banks JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) and Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) , which have risen 1.7% and 1.1%, respectively, likely owe at least some of their gains to optimism among investors that mortgage-lending activity can survive the recent rate increases.

    Lesson 1: Income is king.
A look at the four funds trading at the highest premiums to net asset value reveals a common thread: They're all focused on maximizing income. What's interesting, though, is that they use different methods to reach the same ends. Among the three PIMCO funds, PIMCO High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) looks largely to the high-yield bond market for its holdings, while PIMCO Corporate & Income Opportunities (NYSE: PTY  ) has a somewhat lower distribution rate but has a sizable allocation to investment-grade debt. The fund with the highest premium, PIMCO Global StocksPLUS, uses futures contracts to add stock exposure to its portfolio of income-producing bonds. Finally, BlackRock Virginia Municipal Bond rounds out the top four with its tax-free bond portfolio.

Well, as it turns out, the snake that bit L&L Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:LLEN) and Sovereign Lithium Inc. (OTCMKTS:SLCO) didn't end up biting Makism 3D Corp. (OTCMKTS:MDDD). And in retrospect, that's probably how it should be. Indeed, the fact that MDDD didn't even come close to suffering the same fate as SLCO or LLEN did may be the biggest assurance Makism 3D fans could hope for that the company is everything it says it is.

Darden Restaurants: Breakup Battle Heats Up

The gloves are off. Barington Capital Group, which first proposed restructuring Darden Restaurants (DRI) by working with management, has changed course and asked Darden's independent directors to name an independent chairman and consider hiring a new CEO.

Bloomberg

Barington, which previously reported that it controlled more than 2% of Darden shares, also announced its support of Starboard Value's push to allow shareholders to vote on the company's proposed Red Lobster separation. See the details in this morning's press release.

The news comes in the wake of a number of moves by Darden that could be seen as less than shareholder friendly. Earlier this month the company replaced its investor day meeting with individual meetings with shareholders and analysts. Then last week Darden amended its corporate bylaws. The company's SEC filing said the amendments were made as part of its regular corporate governance review and the bylaws were updated to address current market practices.

The amendments require shareholders proposing director nominations or additional business at a shareholder meeting to hold their shares through the date of the meeting. They also have to make additional disclosures regarding their interest in the company, the business being proposed and/or their relationship with the shareholder nominees. Those being nominated for director must also make additional disclosures.

"As we have said previously, our focus is on doing what is in the best interest of all Darden shareholders and the Board is confident in the actions the Company is taking to deliver on this responsibility," the company said in an email. "We have been speaking directly with our shareholders and look forward to continuing that dialogue."

ISS Corporate Services has given Darden's corporate governance a QuickScore of 10 out of a range of 1 (low governance risk) to 10 (high governance risk). ISS highlights fact that the chairman and CEO roles have not been separated that and that 45% of the non-executive board members have lengthy tenure.

Darden shares rose slightly on the Barington news. They’re up 0.3% to $50.86 at 2:09 p.m. today, as by now it's likely a far gone conclusion that the battle over Darden's future is likely to be heated.

Five Ways to Make Money From Spring Cleaning

It might not feel like it where you live, but spring is officially here. So it's time for the annual clean associated with the season. This can be an opportunity to do more than just clear out cobwebs and sweep away the dust. Spring cleaning also can yield financial rewards.

SEE ALSO: 11 More Ways to Get Extra Cash

As you declutter your home, you might unearth a goldmine of stuff you can sell or donate. Here are five ways you can unload items you no longer want for cash or tax benefits.

Sell your stuff online. There are sites galore that make it relatively easy to sell almost anything. Some even cover the cost of shipping, so you don't have to worry about those fees eating into your profits.

Books: BookScouter.com makes it easy for you to get the best price for you books. Simply type in the ISBN from your book and BookScouter.com scans prices from more than 40 book-buying sites to show you which ones are offering the best prices. Click on "sell here" next to the vendor of your choice to go to its site and sell your book.

Collectibles: One of the best places to get top dollar for your collectibles and small items of value is eBay. Click on the "register" link in the top left corner of the homepage to create an account. Then visit the site's "Seller Center" to learn how to sell. You can list 50 items every month for free, and you'll pay a 10% fee on each item when it sells. Research merchandise similar to what you plan to sell so you can price your wares competitively.

Clothing, handbags, shoes: Fashion resale site thredUP.com makes it easy to sell women's and kids' clothing, shoes and handbags. It sends you a pre-paid, pre-addressed "Closet Clean Out Bag" to fill with clothing that's in good condition. You can earn up to 80% of the resale value in cash or shopping credit. If you have high-end men's and women's clothing, jewelry, watches and accessories, try your luck with luxury consignment site The RealReal. You earn up to 70% of the resale value in cash. The site will send you a shipping label or provide free pick-up in 16 major cities.

Electronics: You can sell used smart phones and Apple products worth $1 or more at Gazelle.com and get paid by check, PayPal or an Amazon gift card. Shipping is free. BuyMyTronics.com pays cash (and covers the shipping) for smart phones, digital cameras, tablets, game consoles and more. You can sell smart phones, tablets, laptops and video games to NextWorth.com for cash or take items to one its partner stores, such as Target, and get store credit. At uSell, you can sell smart phones, tablets, game consoles, video games and textbooks. Shipping is free, and you get paid by check or through PayPal.

Furniture: Of course, you can sell furniture through eBay, but you have to ship it. To avoid that hassle, you can list large items (for free) on your local Craigslist classifieds and buyers will come to you. Just be sure to insist on cash to avoid bounced checks. Take good photos, share key details and provide a concise description of what you're selling.

Gift cards: If you have a gift card you won't use, check online sites that buy unwanted cards. At GiftCardGranny.com, you can compare offers from several gift card resellers. You won't get the full value of your card. Cash paybacks are typically about 50% to 90% of a card's value. But if someone gave the gift card to you, it's like getting free money.

Have a yard sale. If you don't want to bother with selling your stuff online, you might fare just as well with a yard sale or garage sale. (You really should sell collectibles online, though, because you'll reach a larger market and fetch a higher price.) Check out other yard sales, Craigslist, eBay and consignment shops before you have your sale to see how items are priced. Then set prices slightly higher than what you expect to get and be prepared to negotiate.

Take your stuff to a consignment store. Consignment stores make it easy to unload items you no longer want and get cash for them without the hassle of actually trying to sell them yourself. Look for upscale consignment stores that get a lot of traffic if you want top dollar for clothing, furniture, linens, china, glassware or artwork. Expect to split the profit 50/50 with the store. (Ask for details, though, because store policies vary.) See How to Sell Clothes on Consigment and What to Sell – And Not to Sell – at Consignment Shops for tips.

Sell gold and silver for scrap. If you have gold jewelry that isn't valuable as an antique or a designer piece, you might make more selling it for scrap. Pure, 24-karat gold is valued at more than $1,300 per ounce right now, but that's the price for tradeable coins or bars. Scrap gold fetches far less. Keep in mind that most gold jewelry isn't pure, say 14-karat or 18-karat, so you'll need to calculate the melt value to get a better sense of its worth as scrap. (The melt value reflects the actual amount of gold in the jewelry.) Even then a dealer will only offer you a percentage of the melt value. Quotes will vary widely, so get several. For example, if you have a gold ring with a melt value of $200, expect no more than perhaps 70% of the melt value -- so $140. See Smart Ways to Sell Your Gold to learn more.

Same goes for silver. Maybe you inherited several sterling trays you never use. Assuming the trays hold no particular value to collectors, you could get more by selling them for scrap rather than trying to sell them at a consignment store or online. As with gold, check with several metals dealers, both online and at storefront locations, to get quotes. Brace yourself for lots of low-ball offers. Pure silver is priced at about $20 per ounce right now, but you'll only earn a fraction of that because dealers factor in a profit for themselves as well as their costs to melt and refine the metal.

Donate to charity. Whether you want to be generous or simply don't want to bother with selling your stuff, you may be able to reap financial rewards by donating items to qualified charities. If you itemize deductions on your federal tax return, you can claim the items you give as charitable contributions, which could lower your tax bill or increase your refund. Goodwill and The Salvation Army have valuation guides to help you establish a dollar amount to claim for the items you donate. If your noncash contributions total more than $500, you must complete Form 8283 and attach it to your tax return. Items valued at more than $5,000 generally require a written appraisal. Make a list of everything you donate, and be sure to get receipts from the charities.

You can donate items to Goodwill and The Salvation Army, or check with your local Better Business Bureau for reputable charitable organizations operating in your area. Some organizations such as Amvets, which supports veterans, will pick up items from your home.

Top 10 Cheapest Stocks To Buy Right Now

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The most expensive playoff game to see this week is the New Orleans Saints' game in Seattle against the Seahawks, with the cheapest ticket on TicketCity going for $134. TicketCity found that the average ticket price for Saturday's game is a whopping $360.

This weekend, the NFL divisional playoffs might be heating up, but are fans paying up to see them?

"There are a few key factors that are driving record demand for the Saints/Seahawks game.  The Saints have earned the franchise's first-ever road post-season victory, ending the drought at 0-5.  On the other side, the Seahawks have recorded double digit victories in consecutive seasons while their fans continue to break attendance and noise records. It's the perfect storm for driving one of the most expensive divisional game tickets we've seen in recent years," said TicketCity COO Zach Anderson.

This weekend's San Diego Chargers/Denver Broncos game also makes the list of most expensive playoff games in recent years.  To see one of the biggest stars in the NFL, Peyton Manning, and the Broncos host the Chargers, the average ticket on TicketCity will cost you $321.

While ticket prices for the Chargers/Broncos matchup are very similar to last year's AFC div playoff game, according to TicketCity Communications Director Meredith Owen, different factors are driving demand this year compared to last.  Owen says that Ray Lewis' retirement announcement leading into the post season was a major contributor in demand for the Ravens/Broncos 2013 playoff game, while this year's prices are being driven by the fact that the two historical rivals are facing off in the post-season for the first time ever.

But the most expensive playoff game in the last five years goes to the Saints and the 49ers when they played in San Francisco in 2012.  After the Saints went undefeated at home and the 49ers had their first post-season appearance since 2001 -- the average ticket price went for $405... a ! far cry from $84 for the cheapest ticket on TicketCity to see the New England Patriots play the Indianapolis Colts this weekend.

Back in February, my colleague David Englander noted that a potential buyout was one reason to buy shares of Rochester Medical (ROCM). Today, Rochester agreed to be purchased by CR Bard (BCR) for $262 million.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

At least mid-cap medical device maker C.R. Bard (BCR) has been able to keep pace with the S&P this year. Bard makes medical consumables -- one-time-use products designed for an array of medical, surgical, and diagnostic uses. The firm's offerings include everything from biopsy needles and catheters to ultrasound systems.

It's the focus on the consumable side of the business, though, that's been fuelling Bard's top line in 2013. All together, consumables make up around 90 cents out of every dollar the firm earns -- and they come with deep margins and recurring orders as well. A rising tide should help to lift all ships in the medical device market; whatever you think about programs like Obamacare, the net result is more patients and higher rates of medical consumables used.

One of Bard's biggest selling points is preventative -- the firm's top-selling catheters, for instance, help to reduce the likelihood of patient infection, a complication that comes with astronomical costs for hospitals. That proprietary advantage gives Bard an edge in a device that otherwise appears pretty low-moat.

In my view, Bard is a good example of a strong middle-of-the-road health care name. It's certainly not the most exciting company in the sector (far from it), but it's worth owning for investors looking for health exposure in 2013. Institutions picked up 2.26 million shares of Bard, boosting their stakes by more than 20% in the last quarter.

The "smart grid" is growing in fits and starts, but it's one of the more optimistic corners of tomorrow's economy, so it's good for Honeywell investors to see the company dipping a toe in these waters.

Despite what can best be described as asoft economy, small cap trucking stocks YRC Worldwide, Inc (NASDAQ: YRCW), Arkansas Best Corporation (NASDAQ: ABFS), Frozen Food Express Industries, Inc (NASDAQ: FFEX), Saia Inc (NASDAQ: SAIA) and USA Truck, Inc (NASDAQ: USAK) have been trucking some pretty impressive returns since the start of the year. In fact, these small cap trucking stocks are up anywhere from 72% to 150% or so since the start of the year despite the slow economy. Certainly trucking stocks provide a good indicator of how the economy is doing, but might investors bejumping the gun by pushing up these trucking stocks?
