What do BG Medicine, Inc. (NASDAQ:BGMD) and Pentair, Ltd. (NYSE:PNR) have in common? Most investors would say absolutely nothing. BGMD is a small cap medical diagnostics company, while PNR is a large cap industrial equipment manufacturer. Those are worlds that simply never collide. HCP (HCP)

HCP is an economically defensive, diversified real estate investment trust focused on healthcare properties. HCP primarily uses long-term triple-net leases, which leave tenants responsible for property operating and maintenance costs.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

HCP (HCP) is a healthcare REIT that owns hospitals, medical office buildings, and senior housing/nursing facilities. That niche exposure makes HCP more attractive than your typical trust – especially as aging baby boomers ramp up their healthcare and senior living needs. Right now, HCP pays out a hefty 4.6% dividend yield.

Because HCP is the landlord, not the service provider, it's able to take advantage of the increased demand for healthcare services without being subjected to regulatory headwinds. Even if legislation squeezed margins for hospitals, for instance, it doesn't change the fact that those facilities still need physical locations.

Like most commercial operators, HCP leases properties on a triple-net basis. That means that the tenant, not HCP, is on the hook for real estate taxes, insurance, and maintenance costs. That means that HCP just collects a regular, predictable rent check from its tenants, along with a pre-set price bump each year for inflation. For income investors, that's a winning combination.

Earnings per share came in at $0.35 while competitors DDR Corp. (DDR) and Kimco Realty Corporation (KIM) reported earnings per share of -$0.56 and $0.27, respectively. With a price to earnings ratio of 123.57, it is clear investors are expecting higher growth from this stock than its competitors, whose price to earnings ratio are twice as half. I think it will not take very long for the stock to appreciate in value at a much higher rate due to higher revenue, good investor and market sentiment towards the stock, and an improved real estate market.

That the case with Medallion Financial Corporation (TAXI). This neat little company is primarily focused on the financing of taxi cab licenses in major cities like New York. It does other specialty lending as well — such as asset-backed loans for luxury vehicles like boats and art. But its bread and butter has been the taxi business.
