Twitter embraces Twittersphere for earnings call

SAN FRANCISCO -- Twitter is democratizing access to executives during its earnings reports.

The company, based here, plans to review questions submitted on Twitter that are directed to @TwitterIR along with the hashtag #TWTRearnings.

Twitter touted the move along with the announcement Tuesday that its fourth-quarter and fiscal year 2013 financial results are scheduled for February 5.

Questions to Twitter executives will be considered among those asked by the media and financial analysts during its question-and-answer session.

Twitter will host a live webcast of the earnings call at its investor relations website, investor.twitter.com.

Average retail investors may want to chime in on the conversation given Twitter's zigzag trading pattern.

Twitter has emerged as a distribution powerhouse for reporting material information to the the public since such disclosures were approved for the microblogging service and Facebook last year by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Billionaire investor Carl Icahn has been a vocal user of Twitter for disclosures on his positions in Apple among others.

Twitter uses the accounts @dickc, @twitter and @twitterIR for such material disclosures.

Shares of Twitter fell $1.38, or 2%, to $60.08 in afternoon trading on Wednesday.
