Due to the waving of its approval, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has ensured that the two powerhouse mobile companies in the UAE will continue to battle it out and boost mobile price flexibility throughout the emirates, writes John Everington, of The National.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has enabled a significant increase in competition in UAE mobile services by waiving its approval for operators to set prepaid packages and tariffs.
The move is expected to boost competition between Etisalat and du and lead to greater pricing flexibility. Indeed, both companies are now free to introduce tariffs at short notice and change price offerings in response to each other.
his move will expedite the process of new products entering the UAE's ICT [information and communications technology] market and also improve the quality of services provided by Etisalat and du to consumers, within the current competition regulatory framework, the TRA recently said.

Corning (NYSE: GLW ) , up 25%, has been enjoying solid demand for its Gorilla Glass, which generated more than $1 billionin 2012 revenue. Some have high hopes for its partnership with View and its tint-adjusting glass, and XXX. The company has hiked its dividend recently (it yields 2.7%), and gave a big boost to its share repurchase program, though buybacks don't always turn out to have been good things. Corning's forward P/E of 10makes its stock seem attractively priced, though.

You can swing a dead iPhone 4 without hitting a trader or analyst who has a differing outlook on Corning (NYSE: GLW).
Corning manufactures and sells specialty glasses, ceramics, and related materials worldwide. The company operates through five segments: display technologies, optical communications, environmental technologies, specialty materials, and life sciences.
But it Corning tight relationship with Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) that causing a stir among investors this week.
Some say that Apple recent embrace of Sapphire, which could replace Corning Gorilla Glass as the cover glass for Apple next generation of iPhone, is a threat to revenues. That would be a sell trigger for GLW shareholders, they say, as Corning Glass would have trouble replacing the revenue lost from the iPhone deal. (For the record, Apple has made no announcement on Sapphire replacing Gorilla Glass on its iPhones.)
But there is no shortage of Wall Street watchers who say that Corning is a winner, and can withstand any attack on its Gorilla Glass product line.
The analytical firm Argus recently hiked its share price outlook on GLW from $20 to $24, citing an accelerated share repurchase agreement with Citibank. The firm also calls for ouble-digit earnings per share growth in 2014 and 2015.
So which is it? Strong share growth based on healthy revenues, or a dip if and when Apple decides to replace Gorilla Glass with Sapphire.?
Let take a look, and see why the naysayers could be wrong about GLW:
A stronger balance sheet Corning call last week for an accelerated share repurchasing program should be a good sign for the firm share price.
The rollout, which is ongoing now and will end in the second quarter of 2014, will see Corning buy back outstanding shares worth $1.25 billion.
According to company financial statements, the buy back program is part of Corning $2 billion share repurchas - [By WALLSTCHEATSHEET]
Corning has been a strong company for many years. The company culture is strong, which often indicates a winner. According to Glassdoor.com, employees have rated their employer a 3.6 of 5, and 80 percent of employees would recommend the company to a friend. Furthermore, 85 percent of employees approve of Wendell P. Weeks. It should also be noted that volumes and prices have improved. The dilemma is the economic environment we live in. There is a tremendous disconnect between Wall Street and Main Street. If all monetary stimuli were taken away tomorrow, where would the market be? No one knows the answer to that question. While this event won take place, there will eventually be a gradual exit. How durable will Corning be as this unfolds?
- [By Victor Selva] for having placed a huge bet on liquid crystal display (LCD) production. Although the firm has made an effort to diversify its production over recent years, its net income is still concentrated on their display technology segment (97% in 2010, almost 90% in 2011 and 82.28% on 2012, according to annual reports).
Despite being so dependent on American consumers (in contrast with other electronic components distributors), Corning and Samsung Corning Precision (SCP, a 50% subsidiary) have half the market share in the glass panel industry. So, in order to evaluate whether this company is worth being considered as a profitable long-term alternative or not, we should take a deep look into the LCD market, and characterize it, so as to know what we should expect from it.
LCD Industry Overview
Of course, a great bet also involves many risks. Even though LCD technology became very popular in these last few years, both in TV screens and computer monitors, we should never miss the fact that technological markets are often exposed to products becoming obsolete due to the development of new, more efficient technology. Without going any further, it easy to recall the plasma display panel (PDP) fiasco, an apparently promising market in the 1990s and early 2000s but quickly replaced by LCDs (by 2008 LCDs sell 21.1 million units, almost 10 times PDP sales on the same year). Even Panasonic Corporation (PCRFF) announced it will interrupt production of PDP on 2014.
Despite being a competitive market, technology shifting isn always so abrupt, since new developments aren necessarily compatible with already developed accessories, therefore implying shifting costs. Even if the LCD industry were to become stagnant as a result of technological developments, sales revenues would not be completely shattered in the short term.
Contrast with Competitors
